The A3J-1 is a two-place, two-engine attack aircraft, designed for carrier-based operation. It is capable of supersonic high and low altitude special weapon delivery. The aircraft is characterized by a relatively long nose section, a sharply swept, shoulder-mounted wing, a tall vertical stabilizer, and large, rectangular air intakes. The one-piece vertical stabilizer, the wings and the radome may be folded to facilitate hangar deck storage. Lateral control is provided by a system of spoiler-deflectors which are also used as speed brakes. The special stores, fuel cans or a buddy tanker package may be carried in a linear bomb bay, which runs longitudinally through the center of the fuselage. Store release is effected by a cartridge-actuated ejection gun and is controlled by the bombing-navigation system, through an independent LABS system or manually by the pilot. The flight control systems provide improved supersonic and low-speed handling qualities through a pitch augmentation system and a yaw damper. Landing speeds and angle of attack are reduced by full-span, powered droop leading edges and a boundary layer control system.
